Boyish knits for babe
In my last post I was working on streamlining the edges on my [baby] legwarmers. Since then I have completed both legwarmers and a pair of darling tethered mitts. Now that they're off the needles, blocked, and ready to ship I wanted to share the pattern with you.
Using DK weight yarn, size 5 dpns, and the Chinese Waitress cast on, CO 40 sts. Join in the round and work 1x1 rib for 15 rows. On the next row, k all knit sts and kfb [knit front and back] all purl stitches [60 sts]. Work in stockinette for 38 rows. Work one cable round: sl 2 sts to cable needle and hold in front, k2, k2 from cable needle, repeat to end of round. Work even for 3 rows then repeat cable round once more. K two rounds then place live stitches on spare needles.
In the same manner as before, CO 40 st, join in the round, and work 1x1 rib for 8 rows. On the next row, k all knit sts and kfb all purl sts. Work one row even then graft this cuff to the rest of the legwarmer using the Kitchener stitch. Weave in all ends.
Repeat once more for second legwarmer.
In the same manner as before, CO 24 sts, join in the round, and work 1x1 rib for 6 rows. Work an increase round: k all knit sts and kfb all purl stitches [36sts]. Work in stockinette for 12 rounds. On the next round, *k1, ssk, k12, k2tog, k1* pm, repeat to end of row. Work one round even. On the next row, *k1, ssk, k to 3 sts before marker, k2tog, k1* repeat to end of row. Work one row even. Repeat decrease round followed by even round twice more, then work one final decrease round. With 16 sts remaining, use the Kitchener stitch to finish.
Repeat once more for second mitt.
Work 20 in of 4st icord then attach using the CO tail of each mitt. Weave in any remaining ends.
Gauge for both: 6 sts over 7 rows yield one sq. in.
Remember to block your knits after finishing. The feeling of fiber relaxing as it blocks is still one of my favorite things about knitting-such a simple step yielding such a notable transformation.
