I've said it before, I think circular needles are the best. They can obviously be used to work in the round, but can also do the job of straight needles and double pointed needles (after all, they are just really long double pointed needles). I think they are ideal for beginners to learn on as they are less cumbersome than straight needles and don't pose the problem of losing their mate. They are used just the same way as straight needles, transferring stitches from one needle to the other and then turning the work to do it again, but I have found that the "turn" on circs can be confusing for some new knitters. So, I wanted to share this video with you to give you the confidence to make that turn on your own.
